Governments of Imre Nagy
Three governments of Imre Nagy, 1953–1956.
Imre Nagy served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Hungarian People's Republic (Prime Minister of Hungary) during three distinct periods. His first government, formed on 4 July 1953, was more moderate than that of his predecessor Mátyás Rákosi and attempted to reform the system. After the outbreak of the Hungarian Revolution on 23 October 1956, Nagy was reinstated as prime minister the next day. His second government moved toward a multi-party system, and on 3 November he formed a third government with a Communist minority that included members of the Independent Smallholders' Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the Petőfi Party. The Soviet invasion on 4 November deposed Nagy and installed a new government under János Kádár.
