Mechanical Turk

The Mechanical Turk, also known as the Automaton Chess Player or simply the Turk, was a chess-playing machine first displayed in 1770. It appeared to play chess autonomously but was secretly operated by a hidden chess master. The machine toured for 84 years and was destroyed in a fire in 1854.

The Mechanical Turk was constructed by Wolfgang von Kempelen to impress Empress Maria Theresa, following a performance by French illusionist François Pelletier in 1769. The machine consisted of a life-sized model of a human head and torso dressed in Ottoman robes, with a cabinet containing a chessboard. Its interior had complicated machinery designed to mislead observers, including dummy gears and a sliding seat for the hidden operator. The chessboard used magnets to track moves, and the operator inside could move the Turk's arm via a pantograph mechanism. The Turk could also perform the knight's tour puzzle and, after acquisition by Johann Nepomuk Mälzel in 1804, could say 'Échec!' via a voice box.
