Early life
Kate Upton was born in St. Joseph, Michigan, to Shelley, a former Texas state tennis champion, and Jeff Upton, a high school athletic director. Her uncle is former U.S. Representative Fred Upton, and her great-grandfather Frederick Upton co-founded Whirlpool Corporation. In 1999, her family moved to Melbourne, Florida, where she attended Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. As a young equestrian, she competed nationally with the American Paint Horse Association, earning multiple reserve world championships on her horse Roanie and later on a second horse, Colby.
Career
Upton attended a casting call in Miami for Elite Model Management in 2008 and was signed the same day. She later moved to New York City and signed with IMG Models. She first modeled for Garage and Dooney & Bourke, and was the 2010–11 face of Guess. In 2011, she appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, was featured in the body paint section, and was named Rookie of the Year. She has since modeled for Beach Bunny Swimwear and appeared in Complex and Esquire. In April 2011, a video of her doing the dougie at a Los Angeles Clippers game went viral. In April 2012, a video of her performing the Cat Daddy dance also went viral. She appeared in a June 2011 episode of Tosh.0 and participated in the 2011 Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game. Her acting debut was in Tower Heist (2011) as Mr. Hightower's mistress. She also appeared in The Three Stooges as Sister Bernice, a role that drew criticism from the Catholic League for its portrayal. Upton appeared on the cover of the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and has recounted negative aftereffects from that cover, including feeling objectified.
Personal life
Upton is a committed Christian and has defended her faith against critics who suggested her modeling career conflicts with religious values. In a 2013 interview with Elle, she recalled an incident during a photoshoot when someone removed her cross necklace and joked about her faith, which galvanized her commitment to expressing her beliefs. She tattooed a cross on the inside of her finger. In 2014, nude photographs of her were illegally leaked online. She began dating Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander in early 2014, became engaged in 2016, and married in Tuscany, Italy, in 2017. They have a daughter born in 2018 and a son born in 2025.
