The pilot follows Sally Javits, who in 2044 writes letters to her daughter Cricket explaining how she met her father. In 2014, Sally separates from her husband Gavin, moves in with her brother Danny and his husband Todd, and goes on a blind date with Frank. After reconnecting with Gavin briefly, she decides they are too different and ends the marriage. The pilot concludes with older Sally revealing that Frank is Cricket's father.

Production began in November 2013, with the primary cast announced in March 2014. Meg Ryan was cast as the older Sally in April 2014. On May 14, 2014, CBS passed on the pilot, with entertainment president Nina Tassler stating that 'there were elements of the pilot that didn't work out.' The show was shopped to other networks, including Netflix, FOX, and NBC, but no deal materialized. In July 2014, Carter Bays confirmed the spin-off was officially dead.

In 2016, a full script of the pilot leaked online. In 2020, the original full pilot episode, intended for a sales presentation, was leaked on Reddit. The project was later reimagined as How I Met Your Father, ordered by Hulu in April 2021 with Hilary Duff as the lead.
