Plot

Lily found out about Ted's New York bucket list on Friday at 2:00 PM, just 52 hours before the wedding. She was annoyed that she was the only one who knew he was leaving. While reviewing the items, Lily helped Ted see that the list really showed how much he loved the city. The one thing he hadn't done was share a final scotch with Barney.

Lily pushed Ted to admit he had been dodging both Barney and Robin ever since he tried to help Robin find her locket at the carousel. She told him to let go of the bad memories because the good ones would always be there. During their talk, Lily and Robin confessed they had broken the 30-year-old Glen McKenna bottle Ted had saved for his drink with Barney, using it in a sword fight and then trying to fake the remaining amount. Later, Lily found out that an earlier sword fight between Ted and Marshall had ruined a special dress she wanted for the rehearsal dinner. As punishment, she targeted Marshall, whose road trip with Daphne took them to Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, Robin and Barney realized their elderly relatives would arrive soon for the wedding. They worried that marriage would kill the excitement and passion in their relationship, so they searched for a spot to have sex one last time. But after seeing Robin's great-grandparents still eager for each other after 60 years of marriage, they stopped stressing about becoming dull and argumentative and decided to go greet their family.

Ted finally stopped avoiding Barney and showed up with a bottle and two glasses. Before he could pour the scotch, Barney said he had spotted Ted and Robin at the carousel when she was hunting for her missing locket.

Critical reception

The A.V. Club’s Donna Bowman awarded the episode an A−. IGN’s Max Nicholson rated it 7.0/10, finding only Ted and Lily’s subplot funny and sweet. Popculturology’s Bill Kuchman observed that the ninth season, including this episode, felt disjointed—more a collection of vignettes with emotional endings—and noted that this installment closed with a Lily moment he especially enjoyed.
