Offseason
The 1994 season ended prematurely due to the players' strike, with the Astros holding a 66–49 record and trailing the Cincinnati Reds by half a game in the NL Central. Despite the truncated campaign, first baseman Jeff Bagwell was unanimously voted National League MVP, becoming the first Astro to win the award. He led the league in runs scored, RBIs, and slugging percentage. Second baseman Craig Biggio led the NL in doubles and stolen bases. On December 28, 1994, the Astros traded Ken Caminiti, Andújar Cedeño, Steve Finley, Roberto Petagine, Brian Williams, and a player to be named later to the San Diego Padres for Derek Bell, Doug Brocail, Ricky Gutiérrez, Pedro A. Martínez, Phil Plantier, and Craig Shipley. The deal was completed on May 1, 1995, with Sean Fesh going to the Padres.
Regular season
The Astros opened the season on April 26 with a 10–2 victory over the San Diego Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium. Jeff Bagwell hit the first home run of the season off Andy Benes, followed by a homer from Derek Bell. Phil Plantier also homered, and the Astros scored five unearned runs in the eighth inning. Doug Drabek earned the win. On May 19, Tony Eusebio hit his first career grand slam in a 10–2 win over the Montreal Expos. The next day, the Astros won 2–1 when Jeff Shaw walked in Craig Biggio with the bases loaded. On June 5, Greg Swindell doubled in a run, and Biggio hit a walk-off three-run homer in the ninth to beat the Florida Marlins 6–5. A 16-inning 7–5 win over the New York Mets on June 16 saw Houston take the lead in the 12th and 15th innings before Jeff Bagwell drove in the winning runs. Bagwell hit his 100th career home run on June 20 off Gil Heredia in Montreal. On June 23, Derek Bell had four hits, including a game-winning RBI single in the 12th inning to beat the Chicago Cubs 3–2.
