House of the Dragon season 1

A prequel set nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones.

It tells the story of the House Targaryen's dynastic rise and the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.[1][2] The season averaged 29 million viewers per episode across all US platforms.[3]

Making and release

HBO executives first approached Martin about successors to Game of Thrones in 2015.[4] Martin stated in November 2018 that a potential spin-off would be based on Fire & Blood.[4] By September 2019, a prequel series from Martin and Condal was close to receiving a pilot order.[4] The series was given a straight-to-series order the following month.[4]

Production was paused for two days in July 2021 due to a positive COVID-19 case.[5] The United Kingdom served as the main filming location for the series, with specific sites in Cornwall, Derbyshire, and Hampshire being used.[6][7] August 21, 2022 was the premiere date for House of the Dragon.[8] December 20, 2022 saw the first season become available on 4K UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD formats.[9]

What the cited sources add

The series is set 105 years after Aegon Targaryen I conquered Westeros and founded King's Landing.[2] Martin told HBO to hire Condal because "he knows my books and he likes them."[2] The season finale was watched by 9.3 million viewers on its premiere night, the biggest finale night for an HBO series since Game of Thrones concluded.[3] The series has been renewed for a second season.[3]

Visual effects houses on the series include MPC Episodic and Pixomondo.[1]
