DreadOut
Indonesian survival horror with a camera and ghosts.
DreadOut is a survival horror game released in 2014 by Indonesian independent developer Digital Happiness. It was available on Microsoft Windows, Linux, and OS X. A planned PlayStation 4 port was announced but never came out. The game follows a group of Indonesian high school students who stumble upon an abandoned town, where they encounter ghosts and supernatural events. The main character, Linda, gradually uncovers the secrets of the town and its surroundings. A sequel, DreadOut 2, launched for Windows in February 2020, later arriving on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in July 2022, with a Nintendo Switch version following in January 2024.
In terms of gameplay, DreadOut is a third-person horror title with mechanics reminiscent of the Fatal Frame series. Players use modern tools like a smartphone and a digital camera to interact with or fend off various Indonesian mythical ghosts, and to solve puzzles. When Linda dies, she wakes up in Limbo—a dark space surrounded by candles with a bright light in the distance. Running toward the light revives her, but each subsequent death pushes the light farther away unless she finds three mystical items to keep it closer. The game offers both third-person and first-person control schemes: standard over-the-shoulder navigation switches to a first-person view when using the camera. Any ghost photographed or interacted with is recorded in a “Ghostpedia” inside Linda’s notebook. Players can also find articles and journal entries that explain the game’s backstory. A preview video showed a tablet version where the player controls Linda via touch screen.
The plot centers on Linda Meilinda and her high school friends—Shakira “Ira” Irawati, Doni Maulana, Shelly Angelia, Yayan, and their teacher Ms. Siska—who lose their way during a vacation in Indonesia. They discover an abandoned town and enter an old school, where they become trapped with ghosts. Doni is killed, Ira is possessed, Shelly commits suicide, Yayan vanishes, and Siska goes missing. Linda is pursued by ghosts, including a woman in red. The player can choose to defeat her or leave the school. If defeated, the woman reveals she is the guardian of the spirit realm, granting Linda power and the title of keeper of darkness. Linda then sees Siska leaving the school carrying a baby serpent.

Lore & Background
DreadOut follows high school student Linda Meilinda and her friends—Shakira 'Ira' Irawati, Doni Maulana, Shelly Angelia, Yayan, and their teacher Ms. Siska—who become lost during a vacation in Indonesia and discover an abandoned town. They enter an old school and are trapped with ghosts; Doni is killed, Ira is possessed, Shelly commits suicide, Yayan disappears, and Siska goes missing. Linda is pursued by ghosts, including a woman in red. The player can choose to defeat the woman, who then reveals herself as the guardian of the spirit realm and grants Linda power as the keeper of darkness, or leave the school, leading to a police rescue and a crash caused by the woman.
Gameplay is third-person with a first-person camera view when using Linda's digital camera or smartphone to photograph or fend off ghosts. Photographed ghosts are recorded in a 'Ghostpedia' notebook. Death sends Linda to Limbo, a dark area with candles and a distant light; running toward the light revives her, but subsequent deaths push the light farther away unless three mystical items are found. A tablet version was previewed with touch-screen controls.
Reader's Guide
DreadOut holds significance as a landmark Indonesian independent horror game, developed by a team of about 20 people at Digital Happiness. The studio turned to crowdfunding via Indiegogo, raising US$29,067 against a US$25,000 goal, because Indonesia's game industry was small and focused on social or mobile games, making traditional funding difficult. Founder Rachmad Imron noted that many skilled Indonesian developers worked abroad due to the lack of a local game industry. The game received 'mixed or average' reviews on Metacritic. A film adaptation was announced in 2018 by GoodHouse, directed by Kimo Stamboel, and released in Indonesia on 3 January 2019. A sequel, DreadOut 2, launched for Microsoft Windows in February 2020, later ported to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in July 2022, with a Nintendo Switch port in January 2024. A PlayStation 4 port of the original DreadOut was announced but never released.

Camera, Ghosts, and the Light of Limbo
DreadOut positions the player behind Linda's shoulder in a third-person view, but its true identity is defined by the tools she wields. Rather than a weapon, Linda carries a smartphone and a digital camera, instruments she uses to photograph, interact with, and repel the various Indonesian mythical ghosts that haunt the abandoned town. Switching to the camera snaps the perspective into first person, letting the player see exactly what Linda sees through the lens. Every ghost she photographs or engages gets logged in a Ghostpedia tucked into her notebook, while scattered articles and journal entries build out the town's dark history. The death system is equally distinctive: when Linda falls, she wakes in Limbo, a void of darkness punctuated by flickering candles and a distant bright light. She must sprint toward that light to revive, but each successive death drags it farther away—unless she locates three mystical items that anchor it closer. The game also supported a tablet version where Linda was steered entirely through touchscreen input.
A School Full of the Dead
The narrative follows Linda Meilinda and her senior high school group—Shakira "Ira" Irawati, Doni Maulana, Shelly Angelia, Yayan, and their teacher Ms. Siska—on a vacation trip through Indonesia that goes terribly wrong. The party stumbles upon an abandoned town and, drawn into an old school, finds themselves sealed inside with restless spirits. The toll is devastating: Doni is killed, Ira becomes possessed, Shelly takes her own life, Yayan vanishes without a trace, and Siska is nowhere to be found. Linda is left to navigate the corridors while being hounded by ghosts, most notably a spectral woman dressed in red. The game offers a meaningful fork at the climax. Players can either confront and defeat the woman, who then reveals herself as the guardian of the spirit realm and bestows upon Linda the title of keeper of darkness, or they can simply flee the school. In that second path, Linda is rescued by police, but the woman materializes at the last moment, sending the patrol car into a fatal crash. In the defeat route, Linda also witnesses Siska walking out cradling a baby serpent.
Crowdfunding a Dream in a Small Industry
Digital Happiness, an Indonesian studio, built DreadOut with a team of roughly twenty developers. The local gaming scene in Indonesia at the time was heavily skewed toward social and mobile titles, leaving almost no infrastructure for a full-fledged survival horror project. Unable to secure traditional funding, the team released a playable demo and then turned to the public, launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. Their target was modest—US$25,000—and the campaign ultimately raised US$29,067, enough to carry the project to completion. Founder Rachmad Imron spoke openly about the talent drain plaguing the country: Indonesia possessed plenty of skilled developers, but most had emigrated because there was simply no domestic game industry to absorb them. He expressed hope that projects like DreadOut would help shift that reality. The game shipped in 2014 for Windows, Linux, and OS X, and a PlayStation 4 port was announced but never materialized.
From Sequels to the Silver Screen
DreadOut's story did not end with its 2014 release. DreadOut 2 arrived for Windows in February 2020 and later expanded to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in July 2022, followed by a Nintendo Switch port in January 2024—a far broader platform footprint than the original ever achieved. Beyond gaming, the franchise crossed into cinema. In 2018, Indonesian production company GoodHouse announced a film adaptation, which hit Indonesian theaters on 3 January 2019 under the direction of Kimo Stamboel. The cast included Caitlin Halderman, Jefri Nichol, Marsha Aruan, Ciccio Manassero, Susan Sameh, and Irsyadillah. Despite this cultural expansion, critical reception of the original game remained middling, with Metacritic aggregating it as "mixed or average." Still, DreadOut stands as a notable example of an Indonesian studio carving out a niche in the global survival horror space, proving that a small team working with limited resources could produce a title that resonated well beyond its home market.
