Mexican animated franchise based on legends.
The Legend Quest franchise, known as *Leyendas* in Latin America, is an animated horror-comedy series created by Ricardo Arnaiz and produced by Ánima Estudios. It includes seven films, a digital television series, and a mobile game. The stories follow Leo San Juan, a brave preteen boy who talks to ghosts and monsters, alongside his friends: Theodora, a know-it-all ghost girl; Sir Andrés, a cheerful but eccentric old knight; Alebrije, a gentle mythical creature; and two silent calavera children, Finney and Morybetta. Set in the early 1800s, each movie draws from a different Mexican legend.
The franchise began in 2007 with *The Legend of La Nahuala*, directed by Arnaiz and produced by Soco Aguilar, Arnaiz, Nahuala Producciones Cinematograficas, and Animex Producciones. After the box-office failure of *Nikté*, Ánima Estudios took over production for the sequel, *The Legend of La Llorona* (2011). Later films include *The Legend of the Guanajuato Mummies* (2014), *The Legend of the Chupacabra* (2016), *The Legend of the Black Charro* (2018), *Legend Quest: The Origin* (2022), and *La leyenda de los Chaneques* (2023). A Netflix original series, also titled *Legend Quest*, adapts the franchise.
As one of the few film franchises in Mexico, it is a rare success in the country’s domestic film industry. It has become widely popular and often performs well at the box office, with *Black Charro* being the highest-grossing entry to date.
