The series began with Muni (2007), based on fictional incidents about a young man who migrates to Chennai and becomes possessed by the spirit of a kind-hearted person murdered by a corrupt political leader. The film earned ₹15 crore against a ₹4 crore budget and received positive response. Its success led to a sequel, Kanchana (2011), which grossed ₹60 crore worldwide and became the fifth highest grossing Tamil film of 2011. Kanchana 2 (2015), a stand-alone sequel, was released on 17 April 2015 on around 750 screens and emerged as the third highest grossing Tamil film of 2015. Kanchana 3 (2019) was released on Good Friday, earning ₹130 crore worldwide against a ₹20 crore budget. Kanchana 4, the fifth installment, was announced in April 2019 and began principal photography on 23 January 2025 in Chennai.

Kanchana 2 was remade in Kannada as Kalpana 2 (2016). All released films were successful at the box office, and the series is currently the third highest grossing Tamil film franchise.
