The films follow the Lament Configuration, a puzzle box that opens a gateway to the Cenobites' realm. In the first film, Frank Cotton escapes the Cenobites after his brother's blood spills on the spot where Frank died. His sister-in-law Julia helps Frank regenerate by supplying victims' blood. Frank's niece Kirsty accidentally unleashes the Cenobites but makes a deal to deliver Frank in exchange for her life, ultimately sending the Cenobites back to Hell by solving the box. Subsequent films explore the box's history, Pinhead's human origins, and various characters' encounters with the Cenobites.
