Lore & Background
Kafka hails from Pteruges-V, a planet devastated by a Stellaron where inhabitants lost their ability to feel fear and were driven solely by pleasure, eventually becoming what she calls "devils." Formerly a Devil Hunter dissatisfied with the status quo, she joined the Stellaron Hunters after meeting Elio, who uses predictive scripts to guide them. As one of the group's first members besides Elio, she personally recruited allies like Firefly. Her most defining lore moment occurs in the Trailblaze Mission "The Eye of the Storm," where she and Silver Wolf steal a Stellaron and implant it into the Trailblazer.
Later on the Xianzhou Luofu, she intentionally leaves clues to lure the Astral Express crew, then voluntarily surrenders to the Cloud Knights and is interrogated by Fu Xuan. During their interrogation, Kafka reveals that her group's presence was designed to help the Trailblazer eventually face Nanook, the Aeon of Destruction. In her Companion Mission, she plays a "truth game," disclosing that the Trailblazer is a human who received a Stellaron, not an artificial being created solely for that purpose.
Reader's Guide
Kafka is a 5-star Lightning character following the Path of Nihility. Her gameplay revolves around damage over time (DoT) and follow-up attacks. Her Basic Attack deals single-target Lightning damage, while her Skill hits an enemy and adjacent targets, triggering additional damage based on existing DoT effects. Her Ultimate damages all enemies with a high chance to inflict Shock. A key mechanic is her Talent: whenever a teammate uses a Basic Attack on an enemy, Kafka launches a follow-up attack that applies Shock. In version 3.4, she received significant buffs, allowing her to grant ATK increases to allies and immediately trigger existing DoT effects via her Skill, follow-up attacks, or Ultimate. This synergy makes her essential for teams focused on DoT strategies. She is voiced by Xu Hui (Chinese), Cheryl Texiera (English), Shizuka Itō (Japanese), and Sa Moon-young (Korean).
Origins and Role within the Stellaron Hunters
Kafka serves as the second-in-command of the Stellaron Hunters, a faction walking the Path of Finality and consisting of wanted intergalactic criminals. She is one of Elio's most trusted followers, tasked with achieving a future dictated by his "scripts." Her background lies on Pteruges-V, a planet where Stellarons caused people to become driven only by pleasure and desire, turning into "devils." Dissatisfied as a Devil Hunter there, she joined the Stellaron Hunters after Elio invited her. She was instrumental in recruiting other members, such as Firefly. The organization operates under the philosophy that they are slaves to destiny, with Kafka acting as a key executor of these predestined events across the galaxy.
Narrative Significance and Key Story Moments
Kafka is the first character players control in Honkai: Star Rail during the version 1.0 opening mission. She infiltrates a space station with Silver Wolf to steal a Stellaron, implanting it into the Trailblazer before leaving them to awaken. In the Xianzhou Luofu arc, she intentionally places clues to draw the Astral Express crew to her, leading to a confrontation where she loses to the protagonist and allies. Captured by Fu Xuan, she reveals that her group's goal was to ensure the Trailblazer could help them face Nanook. She escapes with Blade's assistance. Her Companion Mission features a "truth game" where she reveals the Trailblazer is an artificial being created to contain a Stellaron, deepening the mystery of their connection.
Design Philosophy and Cultural Reception
Kafka's design resembles an earlier version from Guns Girl Z, and her name derives from novelist Franz Kafka. She is voiced by Xu Hui (Chinese), Cheryl Texiera (English), Shizuka Itō (Japanese), and Sa Moon-young (Korean). Promoted heavily before version 1.2, she received official artwork on May 24, 2023, and trailers like "Dramatic Irony" on August 8. Players and critics have praised her design as highly attractive and sexy, with Lin Zhuoheng of HK01 calling her the most popular character due to her mysterious, mature appeal. She is often referred to affectionately as "mommy" or "dommy mommy" by fans for her confident demeanor. Comparisons to Makima from Chainsaw Man have also been drawn. Her combat animations, including playing an invisible violin and dual-wielding katanas and submachine guns, are frequently highlighted.
Combat Mechanics and Gameplay Evolution
As a 5-star Lightning character on the Path of Nihility, Kafka specializes in damage over time (DoT). Her Skill damages a target and adjacent enemies while triggering extra damage based on existing DoT. Her Ultimate hits all enemies with a high chance to apply Shock. Her Talent enables follow-up attacks whenever teammates use Basic Attacks, dealing Lightning damage and applying Shock. In version 3.4, she was buffed to grant ATK increases to allies and immediately trigger existing DoT effects through her Skill, follow-up attacks, or Ultimate, enhancing her synergy with DoT-focused teams.
