Plot

The story is told in three parts that are only loosely connected. In the first part, a taxi driver named Cheung works the night shift. Over the course of one night, he picks up five different passengers: a triad boss who is injured, a woman who is faking being a ghost, a mysterious elderly woman, a nervous woman, and the ghost of a traffic policeman.

In the second part, Cheung’s friend Fat moves into a new apartment with his wife and son. Fat is already deep in debt but cannot stop gambling. After he realizes the apartment is haunted, he strikes a bargain with the ghost. The ghost will help him win every time he gambles, and in exchange, Fat will give the ghost half of everything he owns. Fat soon regrets this. The ghost demands not only half of his money but also his wife and even half of his remaining lifespan. His wife and son abandon him. With no other option, Fat kills himself by setting himself on fire.

In the third part, Fat’s son On has grown up. Cheung has stopped driving taxis and now runs a private security company. He hires On and puts him on the night shift at an office building. One night, On and two coworkers encounter a ghostly old woman and find themselves on a 14th floor that does not actually exist. As they try to escape, On has a vision of the haunted apartment from his childhood. When his mother hears about what happened, she asks to join the three of them in reenacting the escape, hoping to meet her husband’s spirit. The attempt works. Fat’s spirit reunites with his family, they forgive him, and he leaves in peace. After this experience, On becomes more mature and sensible.
