Creation of Vessels

Hollow shells forged from shadow to hold the light that burns all.

The Vessels are artificial beings crafted from the Pure Void found beneath Hallownest by the Pale King. Created during the early years of the kingdom, their singular purpose was to serve as a prison for the Radiance, the god-like force whose light had begun to drive the insect population into madness. These hollow shells were designed to be without will, thought, mind, or soul, allowing them to contain the Infection without succumbing to it themselves. While many were created during this period, most proved flawed by developing emotions and thoughts, rendering them useless for their intended purpose.

Lore & Background

When the Radiance's influence spread too far, infecting the minds of the kingdom's citizens with visions and madness, the Pale King sought a solution in the darkness beneath his throne. He discovered the Void, an ancient and formless substance that predated the Light. From this primordial shadow, he shaped hollow constructs without internal organs or bones, intended to be perfect vessels for containment. The process was one of isolation and purity.

The Vessels were raised in silence within the Abyss, kept away from the world above to prevent contamination by emotion or thought. However, the nature of life proved difficult to suppress entirely. Many of these creations began to feel pain, fear, and desire, proving they could not remain truly hollow. These flawed vessels were deemed failures.

Notably, the Pure Vessel—the one chosen by the Pale King—was itself imperfect due to a bond formed with its creator. In the Dream No More ending, the Knight does not contain the Radiance but sacrifices itself to destroy it; the Knight's own hollowness remains ambiguous and is not confirmed by canon.

Reader's Guide

The creation began when the Great Infection threatened to consume Hallownest entirely. The Pale King turned away from the Light and sought power in the Void below. He crafted numerous Vessels intended to hold the Radiance within their bodies, acting as a seal against the corruption spreading through the kingdom. However, the process was imperfect; most vessels developed feelings and thoughts over time. These flawed creations were cast aside into the Abyss or destroyed to prevent them from failing in their duty. Eventually, one Vessel was selected as the perfect candidate to hold the infection indefinitely. This chosen vessel was taken to the Temple of the Black Egg and sealed there with a nail through its mask. The plan succeeded for centuries, delaying the inevitable collapse of the kingdom until the seal finally weakened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is responsible for creating the Vessels?

The Pale King forged these beings using the Pure Void discovered deep within the Abyss beneath Hallownest. He commissioned them to address the threat posed by the Radiance before establishing his kingdom.

What was the primary purpose of creating the Vessels?

Their singular function was to serve as a living prison for the Radiance, preventing her light from driving the kingdom's population into madness. To succeed, they were designed to be hollow shells completely devoid of personal will or thought.

Why were the majority of created Vessels considered failures?

Most specimens developed unwanted emotions and independent thoughts, which made them susceptible to the Infection. These flaws rendered them useless for containing the Radiance, leading to their destruction or sealing away.

In which location within Hallownest were the Vessels forged?

They were crafted in the Abyss, a deep subterranean region located beneath the Deepnest. This area served as the source of the Pure Void necessary to construct their hollow bodies.

What is the current status of the failed Vessels?

The Pale King ultimately discarded or sealed away those who proved imperfect, leaving only a few successful candidates behind. Most remain entombed within the Abyss, while others were destroyed for failing to meet his standards.
