The story follows a serial killer called the Heart Eyes Killer, or HEK, who murders couples in a different American city each Valentine’s Day. In the present year, HEK kills two couples in Seattle, and police find a wedding ring engraved with the initials “J.S.” at one scene. Ally McCabe, a jewelry marketer recently broken up with her boyfriend Collin, gets mocked for pitching an ad campaign about doomed couples—seen as tone-deaf given the recent murders. Her boss, Crystal, orders her to work with freelancer Jay Simmonds on a new campaign. Ally had met Jay earlier at a coffee shop. He invites her to dinner that night, suggesting it could spark campaign ideas. At the restaurant, they argue over their views on love, and Jay leaves. Ally follows him and kisses him after spotting Collin with his new girlfriend. HEK watches from a distance. They reconcile and take a cab to Ally’s apartment, where she realizes she forgot her key. Jay helps her break in, cutting his hand. Ally, who dropped out of medical school, tends to his wound upstairs. HEK attacks them, knocks Jay out, and chases Ally until police arrive. Detectives Zeke Hobbs and Jeanine Shaw arrest Jay, finding him with the killer’s mask and weapon. During questioning, they note his initials match the ring and that he was in the same cities during previous HEK attacks. Ally waits in the lobby with desk officer Fran and IT tech David, who asks her out but she declines. The power cuts, HEK kills Fran, and pursues Ally. Shaw confronts HEK, who wounds her and kills Hobbs.
