Karmanos co-founded the Detroit Compuware Hockey organization in the late 1970s, which grew to include youth, AAA, and junior A levels. In 1989, the Ontario Hockey League awarded an expansion franchise to the group, initially called the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors, later renamed the Detroit Junior Red Wings, Detroit Whalers, and finally the Plymouth Whalers after a move to Plymouth.
