Life and work

His father, Henry de Mille, was a North Carolina-born dramatist and actor who taught English at Columbia College.[2] When he became an adult, DeMille changed his name's spelling to DeMille, thinking it would appear more attractive on a theater marquee.[3] In 1900, DeMille started his acting career on stage, working for Charles Frohman's theatrical company.[4] His first stage appearance occurred on February 21, 1900, at New York's Garden Theater in the production Hearts Are Trumps.[4]

On August 16, 1902, in East Orange, New Jersey, DeMille married Constance Adams.[4] The Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company was formed in 1913 by DeMille, Lasky, Sam Goldfish, and several other businessmen; DeMille was appointed director-general.[5] Co-directed by Apfel, The Squaw Man (1914) became a huge success and solidified the Lasky Company's reputation.[6]
