Nearly the whole of Hispania was under Sertorius' control when his power was at its peak.[1] For many years, Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius and Pompey, along with the Sullan regime, made considerable attempts to defeat him, yet he maintained his anti-Sullan resistance.[1]

Life and work

After an undistinguished career as a jurist and orator in Rome, he entered the military and showed unusual courage at the Battle of Arausio in 105 BC.[2] Serving under Gaius Marius, he spied on Germanic tribes and fought at the Battles of Aquae Sextiae and Vercellae.[3][4] He served as military tribune in Hispania Citerior in 97 BC and became familiar with Iberian guerrilla warfare.[4][5] Sertorius was elected quaestor in 91 BC and assigned to Cisalpine Gaul.[6]

He was sent to Hispania as proconsul by late 83 or early 82 BC.[7] His lieutenant Marcus Perperna Veiento assassinated him in 73 or 72 BC.[1] His father passed away before Sertorius reached adulthood, and his mother Rhea devoted herself entirely to raising her only child.[8] During the Social War he fought and received an injury that left him blind in one eye.[9]

Because Sulla blocked his candidacy for tribune, Sertorius became an opponent of Sulla and aligned himself with the Marian faction.[10][11] He waged a rebellion over many years; in 76 BC he beat Pompey at the Battle of Lauron, but after that encountered a series of defeats.[1]
