History

Horrorshow signed to Elefant Traks and put out their first album, The Grey Space, which they mostly made while still in high school. Around that time they joined with Spit Syndicate and Joyride to create the wider One Day crew. Elefant Traks co-founder Urthboy recalled in a blog post that when the duo brought him The Grey Space, he figured they were fans of Atmosphere. He also noted they refused to include the track "Walk You Home" on the album, holding it back for a later record despite his own preference.

The Grey Space earned an ARIA nomination in 2009. The band toured with The Herd, Muph & Plutonic, and Hermitude. Their second album, Inside Story, came out later that year and became a Triple J Feature Album and FBi Album of the Week, praised for its sharp lyrics and soulful sound. In 2012, Horrorshow backed the Hilltop Hoods on a European tour and again on the Hoods' "Speaking in Tongues" Australian run.

They also played the 2012 Brisbane Festival at the Spiegeltent. A track called "Did You Hear?" featuring a horn section hinted at their third album. In early May 2013, they dropped "Unfair Lottery" online, which got radio play. The song deals with the idea of white privilege. Its music video premiered on Channel V's "WTF" on 5 June 2013.

Awards and nominations

Horrorshow has received multiple nominations at the Australian Independent Record Awards. Inside Story was nominated for Best Independent Hip Hop/Urban Album in 2010. King Amongst Many received the same nomination in 2014, as did Bardo State in 2018 and New Normal in 2020. New Normal (Deluxe) was nominated for Best Independent Hip Hop Album or EP in 2021. At the ARIA Music Awards, The Grey Space was nominated for Best Urban Album in 2009, and King Amongst Many was nominated in the same category in 2013. King Amongst Many was also nominated for the Australian Music Prize in 2013. Additionally, King Amongst Many was nominated for Australian Album of the Year at the J Awards in 2013.
