Rana Jashraj

Folk deity and kuladevata of Lohana and Bhanushali communities.

Rana Jashraj, elevated to the name Veer Dada Jashraj, is worshipped as a kuladevata by the Bhanushali (Bansari) in his subcaste Harwara and by the Lohana caste. He is also a deity for Khatri and Saraswat Brahmin communities of Punjab, Sindh, and Gujarat. According to folk tales, Jashraj lived around between 1205 and 1231. At his wedding mandap, he learned that enemies were stealing cattle, the holy animal worshipped by Hindus. He left his fears and confronted the enemies, assisted in war by his sister Harkor. Although the enemy from Kabul was eventually defeated and Jashraj became victorious, he was killed as a result of an enemy stratagem. Vasant Panchami (the fifth day of the spring season) is celebrated as a balidaani diwas (martyr day) of Veer Dada Jashraj.
