The series is set on the fictional world of Exandria, created by Matthew Mercer in 2012, with most of the story taking place on the continent of Tal'Dorei in locations such as Emon and Whitestone. The first two episodes depict an original story about the seven-member Vox Machina team at D&D Level 7 on their first 'grown-up' mission, occurring prior to Critical Role's first RPG show. The series then adapts the Briarwood arc, in which the crew avenges the murder of the de Rolo family (the rulers of Whitestone) by Lord and Lady Briarwood, though Percy de Rolo survives and is part of Vox Machina. Seasons two and three adapt other classic story arcs, such as the Chroma Conclave arc. Season four picks up a year after season three, with the members having parted ways.

Within an hour it raised over $1 million, and by the campaign's close on April 19, 2019, it had raised $11,385,449 from 88,887 backers, becoming the most funded Kickstarter for TV and film projects at the time. The success led Amazon Studios to acquire streaming rights and commission additional episodes. The series received widespread acclaim for its animation, humor, voice acting, action sequences, writing, and faithfulness to the actual play web show. A spin-off series, The Mighty Nein, set twenty years later and adapting Critical Role's second campaign, premiered on November 19, 2025. The show was renewed for a fifth and final season in July 2025.
