Making and release
That issue was edited by Edward L. Ferman and sold for $1.50.[2] In the October 1981 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, a short story titled "The Tale of the Student and His Son" appeared, which was an excerpt taken from this novel.[3][2] A limited run of The Claw of the Conciliator was issued by Centipede Press during 2008.[4] Only 100 copies of that edition were made, and Gene Wolfe autographed each one.[4]
A slipcase was provided to protect the book.[4] Customers paid $225 to purchase this limited edition.[4]
What the cited sources add
That account states that Wolfe's series has won numerous awards and spawned a fair amount of literary study.[5] Greg Costikyan reviewed the novel in Ares Magazine #9, writing that "This is fantasy as it should be written".[6] Costikyan added that "If Wolfe never writes another word, he will have made his mark."[6] The novel also won the Locus Award in 1982 and received Hugo and World Fantasy Award nominations that same year.[1]
