Piper is a genus in the family Piperaceae, containing about 1,000–2,000 species of shrubs, herbs, and lianas. Many species are dominant in their native habitats, and the genus is economically and ecologically important. The scientific name Piper and the common name 'pepper' derive from the Sanskrit term pippali, referring to long pepper (P. longum).

Most Piper species are herbaceous or vines, with some growing as shrubs or small trees. They belong to the magnoliids, neither monocots nor eudicots, and are most closely related to the lizardtail family (Saururaceae). The earliest fossil, †Piper margaritae from the Late Cretaceous of Colombia, indicates extensive diversification during the Cretaceous, coinciding with the final breakup of Gondwana. An earlier potential record, †Piper arcuatile from the Cenomanian to Santonian of Yukon, is less reliable.
The largest number of species are found in the Americas (about 700), with about 300 from Southern Asia, 40 from the South Pacific, and 15 from Africa. The American, Asian, and South Pacific groups appear monophyletic; the affinity of African species is unclear. Some species are sometimes segregated into genera such as Pothomorphe, Macropiper, and Ottonia, but other sources keep them in Piper.
Piper species have a pantropical distribution, often dominant in lowland tropical forest understories. Some live in mutualism with ants, and fruits (peppercorns) are dispersed mainly by birds and small fruit-eating mammals. Despite chemical defenses, some herbivores like the sematurine moth Homidiana subpicta and flea beetles of the genus Lanka have evolved resistance.

Betel (P. betle) leaves are used as a stimulant, while kava (P. methysticum) is used for its depressant and euphoriant effects, though kava pills have shown hepatotoxicity. Ecologically, many Piper species are threatened by unsustainable logging, while others like spiked pepper (P. aduncum) have become invasive. The genus also provides ornamentals for gardens and indoor pots.
