The Dreamlands
Where nightmares take flesh and ancient gods whisper in the dark.
The Dreamlands represent a metaphysical dimension acknowledged within the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense's cosmology, deeply intertwined with the Cthulhu Mythos that permeates Hellboy's world. While not a physical geography like the Underworld or Faerie Realm, it functions as a psychic plane where thoughts manifest as reality. It serves as a dangerous boundary between the waking mind and supernatural influence.

Lore & Background
The Bureau monitors psychic disturbances that often originate from fissures into this dimension. Certain artifacts, such as cursed mirrors or ancient tomes, act as gateways for agents to inadvertently slip through while investigating paranormal cases. The Dreamlands are frequently cited in reports regarding mass hallucinations and cult activities where members claim to have communed with deities residing beyond the veil of normal perception.
Reader's Guide
The Dreamlands are not a destination for field agents unless they possess specific psychic training or protection wards. In the story of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D., this realm matters because it is often where prophecies originate before manifesting in reality. Its role is primarily as a source of supernatural threats rather than a place to be explored physically. The Bureau treats entries into this space as high-risk containment scenarios, fearing that entities might cross over during moments of weakness or ritualistic invocation. Understanding the Dreamlands helps explain mass hysteria events and the origin of certain nightmares that plague investigators. It serves as a reminder that the enemy is not always physical; sometimes it lives inside the mind itself.
Did You Know?
- The Dreamlands are conceptually linked to the same Mythos cosmology that includes R'lyeh in this universe.
- Psychic agents within the B.P.R.D. use containment protocols to prevent accidental entry during deep meditation.
- Unlike Faerie, time does not flow linearly within these dream spaces.
- Certain artifacts found by Hellboy have been traced back to objects lost here.
