The Rival Candidates

Every blade on this island points at the same prize—and at each other.

"The Rival Candidates" is a fan-identified arc in Tadayoshi Kano's Jigokuraku (Hell's Paradise) in which Gabimaru and Yuzuriha, having established themselves on the fabled island, are forced into direct confrontation with other groups of shinobi and warriors who were dispatched with the same objective: to locate the Elixir of Life. Rather than a single unified expedition, the island has become a killing ground where multiple factions, each backed by different masters and armed with distinct supernatural abilities, circle one another like predators in a shrinking territory.

Lore & Background

The broader thematic engine of this arc is the question of whether the Elixir is a reward or a test. Betrayal is not a moral failing in this ecosystem—it is a survival strategy. The arc asks the reader to sit with the discomfort of characters who are simultaneously heroic and monstrous, who protect each other fiercely while calculating, in the back of their minds, exactly how they would kill the person standing beside them if the island demanded it.

Reader's Guide

Working title: The Rival Candidates (fan-designated arc) Mid-early serialization (approximately chapters 15–35, spanning the first major competitive encounters on the island) Gabimaru and Yuzuriha, having survived their initial landing and the island's first wave of hostile fauna, discover they are not the only expedition in play. Multiple rival candidate groups, each with distinct supernatural abilities and separate masters, begin converging on the same uncharted territory, forcing the duo into a triage of trust, threat-assessment, and survival. (1) First direct skirmish with a rival squad, where Gabimaru's executioner's reflexes and Yuzuriha's diagnostic sight turn a numerical disadvantage into a narrow escape. (2) A shifting alliance: a rival candidate offers a temporary truce in exchange for information, only for the trust to be tested when one of the group's own members is revealed to be compromised. (3) A power-revelation moment in which a rival's ability is shown to be a corrupted or partial application of the Elixir itself, reframing the quest from a race to a contamination event. (4) A costly death or severe injury within Gabimaru's own circle, forcing Yuzuriha to confront the limits of what her sight can save. The immediate conflict cools, but the island's true architecture is revealed to be far larger and more layered than any single expedition charted. Gabimaru and Yuzuriha emerge with a hard-won understanding that the Elixir is not a single object to be seized but a process embedded in the island's ecology, and that every rival they have fought or allied with is, in some sense, a variable in an equation they have not yet been allowed to read. The group's dynamic tightens: Yuzuriha's reliance on Gabimaru deepens, and Gabimaru's willingness to protect someone—rather than merely execute a mission—begins to crack the executioner's armor he has worn since childhood.
