Range War (Hell on Wheels)

"Range War" is the twenty-fourth episode of *Hell on Wheels* overall and the fourth installment of its third season. It first aired on AMC on August 24, 2013. The episode was co-written by Mark Richard and Reed Steiner, with Dennie Gordon directing.

The story picks up after Cullen Bohannon’s railroad crew is attacked. Initially suspecting Native Americans, Cullen learns the cattle theft and murders were actually carried out by white men. He tracks down the rustlers, kills most of them, and confronts Thomas Durant in Omaha, dropping a corpse at his table and accusing him of orchestrating the attack. Durant denies involvement, backed by a local sheriff. Outside, rancher Maggie Palmer introduces herself to Cullen and offers to sell him cattle, predicting a range war as the railroad pushes westward.

Meanwhile, Declan Toole arrives in town, seeking out Eva and her baby. He explains that Irish custom requires him to marry his deceased brother’s widow. Eva refuses his claim and shuts the door on him. Later, Declan confronts Elam in the saloon, demanding to take Eva and the child to New York, but Elam warns him to stay away from his family.

The Swede, now going by “Mr. Anderson,” helps a stranded family repair their wagon axle, then leads them in prayer, grieving his own family whom he claims were killed by Native Americans.

Back in town, Major Bendix and his troops arrive carrying poles topped with severed Indian heads. Cullen tells Bendix to call off the attack, but Bendix insists he is hastening the end of the war. Cullen warns that the Indians will retaliate, but Bendix argues they need to be wiped out. Later, Cullen learns that surveyors have been attacked by Indians. He buries the dead and requests more soldiers.

In a quiet moment, Cullen brings food to Ruth in the church. He admits innocent people have died by his hand. Ruth tells him killing is a sin, but says he can be redeemed if he truly hates his sin, even if he cannot turn away from it.

The episode closes with Cullen placing the severed Indian heads on a sacred burial platform.

"Range War" was watched by 1.88 million viewers and received a 0.5 rating among adults 18–49. TV Fanatic’s Sean McKenna gave it a 4.4 out of 5, praising the episode for providing real conflict and story direction after a slower start to the season, along with cool action and needed humor.
