The original line-up consisted of vocalist Kristoffer 'Garm' Rygg, Carl August Tidemann on guitar, Skoll on bass, and the two other original members, Hellhammer on drums and Steinar Sverd Johnsen as the main composer/keyboard player. In 1994, Samoth played guitar on the EP *Constellation* and released it on his record label, Nocturnal Art; Samoth himself handled bass duties on that EP, with Skoll joining later for the debut album.

After four full-length albums (including *Aspera Hiems Symfonia*), Rygg departed from the band. He was replaced by Øyvind Hægeland, who performed live and sang on the album *Sideshow Symphonies* (2005). The Breakup, the Long Silence, and the Comeback

On 16 April 2007, Arcturus announced their dissolution, a decision that had already been made "some time ago," according to an official statement signed by all members. The final show of their Australian tour in Melbourne carried a telling moment: ICS Vortex greeted the crowd with the words, "Welcome to the last Arcturus show — ever." The statement cited ongoing personal and professional commitments that made it impossible to continue. For several years, the band existed only in rumor. Garm expressed no interest in rejoining, and ICS Vortex's planned appearance at ProgPower USA 2011 was scrapped due to what he called "hibernation sickness" and "outdated parts." A subsequent show at Avant-Garde Night vol. 2 in Poland also fell through. The group finally took the stage again on 9 September 2011 at KICK Nattklubb & Scene in Kristiansand, Norway. Momentum built through 2012 festival dates at Inferno, Hellfest, and the O2 Academy in Islington. By October 2014, Vortex had finished tracking new vocals, and in February 2015 the band confirmed a deal with Prophecy Productions. Their long-awaited album Arcturian arrived on 8 May 2015, preceded by the single "The Arcturian Sign" in late March.

A Revolving Door of Musicians

Arcturus has never had a single stable lineup. The original bassist-vocalist Marius Vold, who came from Thorns, departed for personal reasons early on, and the group quickly reorganized around what became a black metal supergroup configuration featuring Garm on vocals, Carl August Tidemann on guitar, Skoll on bass, Hellhammer on drums, and Sverd Johnsen as the principal composer and keyboardist. In 1994, Samoth contributed guitar to the Constellation EP, released on his own Nocturnal Art label. After Garm's departure following three albums, Øyvind Hægeland of Spiral Architect stepped in for live work but never appeared on a recording; he left in January 2005 after moving too far away. ICS Vortex then took over vocals, having already contributed to three tracks on La Masquerade Infernale. Carl August Tidemann's exit brought Knut Magne Valle into the fold, and Tore Moren joined in 2003 on second guitar, eventually becoming a full member. The two shared lead duties, Knut on a seven-string and Tore on a standard six-string. Since the 2011 reunion, the core has been Hellhammer, Sverd Johnsen, Skoll, Valle, and Vortex, with Sebastian Grouchot adding violin for live performances from 2015 onward.
