Century Media was founded by Robert Kampf and Oliver Withöft in Dortmund, Germany, in 1988. The label specialized in many different styles of heavy metal music and launched or furthered the careers of bands such as Grave, Samael, Tiamat, Unleashed, Asphyx, Butcher Babies, Devin Townsend, Diecast, Divine Heresy, Eyehategod, God Forbid, Iced Earth, In This Moment, Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, Nevermore, Shadows Fall, Suicide Silence, Warbringer, Winds of Plague, and Skinlab. A number of artists listed are licensed to Century Media for the American market from labels mostly based in Europe. Century Media is also home to Arch Enemy, Lorna Shore, Napalm Death, Orbit Culture, and Queensrÿche.

Lacuna Coil's 2002 album Comalies became Century Media's first act to crack the Billboard 200 album chart, peaking at No. 178 two years after its release. Their fourth album, Karmacode, peaked at No. 28 on the U.S. Billboard Album Chart and hit number one on the Top Independent Albums Chart. Shadows Fall's 2004 album The War Within debuted at number one on the Independent Albums chart and set a new milestone for the label with a Top 20 debut on the Billboard 200. In August 2011, Century Media pulled all of their acts from Spotify, citing an attempt to protect the interests of their artists, but made their entire catalog available again on July 30, 2012 after discussions with Spotify and messages from fans.

Century Media Records was established in 1988 in Dortmund, Germany, by Robert Kampf and Oliver Withöft. What began as a small operation in a German city grew into a heavyweight force in the heavy metal world, with offices spanning Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The label made a deliberate choice to embrace a wide spectrum of heavy metal rather than narrowing to a single subgenre, a strategy that allowed it to build an extraordinarily diverse roster. Over the decades, Century Media launched or significantly advanced the careers of artists including Grave, Samael, Tiamat, Unleashed, Asphyx, Devin Townsend, Iced Earth, Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, Nevermore, Shadows Fall, Suicide Silence, Winds of Plague, Arch Enemy, Napalm Death, Queensrÿche, and the hardcore punk group Sick of It All. Some of these artists were licensed to Century Media specifically for the American market from European-based labels, while others became core members of what the company called the "Century Family." Chart Breakthroughs & Commercial Milestones

For years, heavy metal labels struggled to break into mainstream American charts, but Century Media steadily chipped away at that barrier. The first major milestone came with Lacuna Coil's 2002 album Comalies, which became the label's first release to crack the Billboard 200, landing at number 178 roughly two years after its initial release. The band's fourth album, Karmacode, dramatically improved on that showing, selling more than 490,000 copies and reaching number 28 on the U.S. Billboard Album Chart while topping the Top Independent Albums chart. Shadows Fall then set a new house record with their 2004 release The War Within, which debuted in the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and also claimed the number one spot on the Independent Albums chart, ultimately moving over 300,000 copies. Beyond those headline acts, the label's roster produced Billboard 200 appearances from In This Moment, Arch Enemy, Stuck Mojo, Nightrage, Behemoth, Strapping Young Lad, Suicide Silence, and God Forbid. In 2008, Finnish band Sentenced earned a platinum certification for their Buried Alive live DVD, further cementing Century Media's commercial credibility.

Imprints & Sub-Labels

Century Media demonstrated a keen instinct for niche markets through its subsidiary imprints. In the mid-to-late 1990s, the label launched Century Black, a division often likened to "the Miramax Films of black metal." Founded and run by Rayshele Teige, who had previously worked as a publicist for the parent company, Century Black specialized in surfacing obscure black metal recordings from small European labels such as Malicious Records and Candlelight Records—albums that would otherwise have been virtually unobtainable in the United States. Teige also handled American distribution for Osmose Productions and later led the U.S. office for Prophecy Productions. By 2000, the imprint was wound down as several of its artists either signed with other American metal labels or were absorbed directly into the main Century Media roster. A second imprint, Abacus Recordings, was created in 2002 with a focus on metalcore acts. After five years of operating as a separate brand whose releases were distributed by the parent, Abacus was formally folded back into Century Media on July 24, 2007.

Ownership, Distribution & Evolution

Century Media's business trajectory reflects the broader consolidation of the music industry. For years, the label relied on EMI for distribution—handling its U.S. releases since 1997 and European output since 2005. In April 2009, that partnership was extended to cover Australasia as well. Then, in August 2015, Sony Music acquired Century Media for $17 million, a deal that shifted the label's global distribution to Sony while RED took over U.S. distribution duties. The following year, on June 7, 2017, Century Media sold its music publishing catalogue to Reservoir Media Management, further streamlining its operations. Meanwhile, co-founder Robert Kampf had already signaled his desire to explore new creative territory: in late 2014, he launched Another Century, a hard rock–focused label he described as driven by his "undying love for rock." The new venture signed acts like New Years Day, XO Stereo, and Like a Storm, while artists such as Adrenaline Mob and Fozzy, previously on the Century Media roster, appeared on Another Century's artist page. Tragically, co-founder Oliver Withöft passed away in January 2014 after a prolonged illness, prompting tributes from across the metal community.
