Jorma Valtonen

Finnish goaltender, Olympic player, and Hall of Fame inductee.

Jorma Juhani Valtonen, a Finnish goaltender, played professionally in the SM-liiga. He represented Finland at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Valtonen entered the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989 and the IIHF Hall of Fame a decade later. After his playing career, he coached the Finnish women's national team and worked as a goaltending coach in the KHL.

Career

Valtonen was born in Turku, Finland, and played for Jokerit, TPS, RU-38 and Ässät. In Italy he played for HC Gherdëina and HC Alleghe. He attended training camps for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs in 1972 and for the Penguins in 1974. In West Germany he played for EHC 70 München during the 1980–81 season. Valtonen was the goalie for Finland at the 1980 Winter Olympics. He won an Italian league championship and three Finnish league championships. After retiring, he became head coach of the Finland women's national ice hockey team and the TPS women's team, then goaltending coach of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the Kontinental Hockey League. He was not aboard the flight of the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash, having been asked to stay behind to work with the junior team. In 2015 he returned to Italy as goaltending coach of HC Gherdëina, and later served as goaltending coach of Asiago.
