Burden of Proof (TV series)

A brother's search for the truth about his sister's disappearance.

Last updated

Cynthia Hill directed and produced this American true crime documentary miniseries, a psychological thriller. It follows Stephen Pandos investigating his sister Jennifer’s 1987 disappearance. The show debuted on HBO on June 6, 2023.

Premise

Fifteen-year-old Jennifer Lynn Pandos vanished from her Williamsburg, Virginia bedroom in 1987; her parents told others she had run away. Decades later, her brother Stephen investigates, becoming convinced their parents are implicated. As new evidence emerges, Stephen begins questioning his own beliefs. The series includes commentary from Jennifer's parents, family, friends, and investigators.

Production

Stephen Pandos contacted Cynthia Hill in 2015 after her film Private Violence, seeking to tell his sister's story. Andrea Weigl, a former Raleigh News & Observer reporter, helped investigate and locate people involved.

Shot over several years, the project was initially a feature film but became a series when investigators reopened the case. Hill used re-creations as visual representations, not as truth. HBO Documentary Films produced and HBO distributed.

Reception

Metacritic assigned a score of 74 out of 100 based on 5 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. RogerEbert.com gave three stars, noting Hill avoids true crime pitfalls and makes viewers feel as exhausted by the case as Stephen. Rolling Stone praised the documentary as exceptionally handsome, with crisp editing and painterly reenactments. CinemaBlend described it as one of the best Max original shows to stream in June 2023.
