Lengua Armada Discos

DIY punk label founded by Martin Sorrondeguy.

Martin Sorrondeguy, the singer for Los Crudos and Limp Wrist, founded Lengua Armada Discos as a DIY punk and hardcore label. It started when Los Crudos decided to put out their own first record rather than work with another label, making that single the label’s debut vinyl. Early on, other Los Crudos members helped assemble record covers, while Sorrondeguy managed orders and paperwork; they kept contributing until around 1996. The label grew to release music from bands in Chicago and beyond, including groups from Mexico, Israel, and Spain. Sorrondeguy treated it as part-time DIY work, not a business, and never used written contracts.

Background

Lengua Armada started when Los Crudos chose to put out their own debut record rather than shop for another label. The band's first single became the label's first vinyl release. For the early years, it was a group effort: other Los Crudos members assembled covers, while Sorrondeguy ran mail order and paperwork. That arrangement lasted until roughly 1996. In a 2005 interview, Sorrondeguy estimated the label had put out about 39 releases. He described its outlook as global, not just Chicago-based, pointing to releases by bands from Mexico, Israel, and Spain. The label never used written contracts and generally worked with bands connected to Sorrondeguy or Los Crudos through touring, correspondence, or local punk scenes. Sorrondeguy said he treated the label as part-time DIY work rather than a conventional business. In 2012, the label released Las 4 Bandas, a remastered vinyl reissue of a 1985 cassette that compiled four Peruvian punk bands. In January 2019, it put out Mock Execution's Reality Attack EP. Later that year, Sorrondeguy said the label still issued records occasionally but was not run as a business.
