After a 1–6 start, the team won eight of their next ten games to finish 9–8, their first winning record since 2017. Player movements

Detroit held the second overall pick in the draft and also possessed the final first-round pick, number 32, from the Los Angeles Rams. After the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Travon Walker first overall, the Lions chose defensive end Aidan Hutchinson from the University of Michigan. Holmes noted that Hutchinson, a Michigan native, would make his mark in the community. The Lions then traded the 32nd and 34th picks, along with the 66th pick, to the Minnesota Vikings for the 12th and 46th picks. With the 12th pick, they selected wide receiver Jameson Williams, who was recovering from an ACL tear suffered in the 2022 national championship game.

Regular season

The Lions opened the regular season at home against the Philadelphia Eagles. After a one-yard touchdown run by Jamaal Williams, the Eagles scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter, including a 27-yard interception return by James Bradberry. Detroit responded with a seven-yard touchdown run from D'Andre Swift, but Philadelphia led 24–14 at halftime. The Eagles added 14 points in the third quarter, and the Lions answered with a four-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Detroit scored 14 points in the fourth quarter on a one-yard Williams run and a 22-yard Goff pass to D. J. Chark, but the final score was 38–35 in favor of Philadelphia. In week 2, the Lions again hosted, this time the Washington Commanders. Detroit built a 22–0 halftime lead on a 35-yard field goal by Austin Seibert, a safety forced by Charles Harris, and touchdown passes from Goff to St. Brown and Josh Reynolds. Washington scored 14 points in the third quarter, but the Lions answered with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Swift.

The teams traded fourth-quarter touchdowns, and Detroit won 36–27. St. Brown had two touchdown receptions and set an NFL record with his sixth consecutive game of eight or more catches.
