The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo featured gymnastics across three disciplines: artistic, rhythmic, and trampoline. All events took place at the Olympic Gymnastic Centre in 2021. The competition program matched the 2016 lineup, even though the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) had submitted a request to add a parkour-based event. That request proved controversial, as specialist parkour and freerunning groups lobbied against it, arguing the activity should be recognized as its own sport rather than a gymnastics category.

In artistic gymnastics, both the men’s and women’s team events were reduced from five members per team to four, with additional spots available for up to two specialists. To better link FIG competitions with the Olympics, qualification places were awarded based on aggregate scores from the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series and various continental championships.
As the host nation, Japan received a guaranteed spot in case it failed to qualify through regular methods.
