Gymnastics at the 1996 Summer Olympics

At the 1996 Summer Olympics, artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics were the two disciplines featured. Artistic events took place at the Georgia Dome across two periods: July 20–25 and July 28–29. Rhythmic gymnastics, meanwhile, was held at Stegeman Coliseum on the University of Georgia campus in nearby Athens from August 1–4. These Games marked the debut of the women's rhythmic group all-around competition.

The artistic gymnastics competition unfolded in three stages. In Competition I, which served as both the team and qualification round, gymnasts—including those not on a team—performed compulsory and optional routines. Each team had seven members, but only six competed on each apparatus, and all six scores counted toward the team total (with no dropping of the lowest score). The top 36 all-around scorers advanced to the individual all-around final, and the eight best on each apparatus qualified for that apparatus final. Competition II was the individual all-around final, where qualified gymnasts performed on each apparatus; a gymnast’s final score was the sum of their scores on all six apparatuses for men or all four for women. Competition III comprised the apparatus finals, where qualifiers performed one routine on their specific apparatus, with the final score being the score from that single routine. Each nation could send a maximum of three gymnasts to the all-around final and two to each apparatus final.
