Hollywood Rose was an American glam metal group formed in June 1983 in Los Angeles. They are best known as a direct precursor to the band that would become Guns N' Roses, having merged with L.A. Guns in March 1985 to form that iconic group. The band's early work, including a five-song demo recorded in January 1984, later resurfaced on the compilation 'The Roots of Guns N' Roses' (2004).

Lore & Background

Hollywood Rose was founded by Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, and Chris Weber. During live shows, they were aided by bassists Rick Marrs, Andre Troxx, Daniel 'DJ' Nicolson, and Steve Darrow, along with drummer Johnny Kreis. In January 1984, Rose, Stradlin, Weber, Kreis, and Nicolson recorded a five-song demo. After lineup changes—including Weber, Kreis, and Nicolson being replaced by Slash and Steven Adler, and Stradlin's departure—the group disbanded later that year.

The band reunited for a New Year's show on January 1, 1985, with Rose, Stradlin, and Darrow returning, joined by drummer Rob Gardner. Tracii Guns replaced Weber for that gig. In March 1985, Hollywood Rose merged with L.A. Guns to form Guns N' Roses. Several Hollywood Rose songs later appeared on Guns N' Roses albums, including 'Anything Goes,' 'Reckless Life,' 'Move to the City,' and 'Shadow of Your Love.'

Reader's Guide

Hollywood Rose's significance lies almost entirely in its role as the immediate predecessor to Guns N' Roses, one of the most commercially successful and influential rock bands of the late 20th century. The group's brief existence—spanning just over a year—produced a five-song demo that, while not widely heard at the time, became a historical artifact after its 2004 release. The band's core members, Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin, along with later additions Slash and Steven Adler, formed the nucleus of the Guns N' Roses 'classic lineup.' The merger with L.A. Guns in March 1985 directly created Guns N' Roses, and several Hollywood Rose compositions were carried over into the new band's early releases. The 2004 compilation 'The Roots of Guns N' Roses' sparked a legal dispute when Axl Rose sought an injunction against its release, though a federal judge denied the motion. The band's legacy is thus tied to its foundational role in rock history, preserved through archival releases and the enduring fame of its successor.
