The harlequin bass (Serranus tigrinus) is a marine ray-finned fish, a type of sea bass from the subfamily Serraninae, which is part of the larger family Serranidae—the same group that includes groupers and anthias. This species lives in the western Atlantic Ocean and also appears in the aquarium trade.
Its body is elongated and laterally compressed, with a pointed snout that is shorter than the eye’s diameter. Three spines are clearly visible on the gill cover, with the middle one being straight. The preopercle’s margins are regularly serrated, but no spines sit at its angle. The dorsal fin has 10 spines and 12 soft rays, while the anal fin has 3 spines and 7 soft rays. The caudal fin is slightly concave. The back shows a black-and-white mottled pattern, and the lower body is mottled yellow and black. A black stripe runs from the snout through the eye, and the chin and throat display large black blotches on a white background. Eight vertical black bars appear—two on the nape and six on the body. The caudal fin has a black bar at its base, and its membrane is spotted with black. The dorsal fin carries two lines of black spots, and the anal fin’s base has one such line. The maximum recorded total length is 29 centimeters (11 inches).
In the western Atlantic, this species ranges across the Caribbean from southern Florida to Trinidad and Tobago, and along the mainland coast from Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula to Venezuela.
Typically found alone or in pairs, the harlequin bass inhabits rocky parts of reefs or areas with scattered coral, at depths from 0 to 40 meters (0 to 131 feet). It is carnivorous, hunting by drawing small crustaceans into its large mouth and swallowing them whole. This fish is a synchronous hermaphrodite, meaning it possesses both male and female reproductive organs and can assume either role during spawning; self-fertilization is also possible.
The species was first formally described in 1790 as *Holocentrus tigrinus* by German physician and naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799), who incorrectly listed the type locality as the “Indian Ocean.”
It is used in the aquarium trade.
