The lantern bass (Serranus baldwini) is a small marine fish belonging to the sea bass subfamily Serraninae, which also includes groupers and anthias. It inhabits the western Atlantic Ocean and is sometimes kept in home aquariums.
This species has a moderately compressed, cylindrical body and a snout shorter than the diameter of its eye. Its gill cover bears three well-developed spines, with the middle one being the largest and straightest, and the preopercle edge is finely serrated. The dorsal fin has 10 spines and 11 to 13 soft rays, while the anal fin has 3 spines and 7 soft rays. The caudal fin is slightly concave. The body is white, marked with dark to orange oblong blotches and spots; a distinct row of dark oblong marks runs along the lower flank, and four black spots appear on the caudal peduncle. Fish from deeper waters tend to have a redder, orange, or yellower hue than the paler individuals found in shallower areas. Maximum total length is 12.0 centimeters (4.7 inches).
Its range in the western Atlantic extends from Jacksonville, Florida, south along the Florida coast and around the Bahamas, into the Gulf of Mexico including the Florida Keys. It also occurs along Mexico’s coast from Campeche and the northern Yucatán Peninsula, from northwestern Cuba throughout the Caribbean, and along Central and South America as far south as São Paulo, Brazil.
A marine reef dweller, the lantern bass lives in rocky and weedy areas at depths of 1 to 80 meters. It shows a strong association with turtle grass (Thalassia testudinum) beds, though juveniles sometimes hide in empty conch shells. Territorial in nature, it feeds on shrimps and smaller fishes. The species is synchronously hermaphroditic: individuals can function as either sex when spawning, but social groups typically consist of a large, functionally male territory holder and a harem of hermaphrodites. The male fathers the most offspring by mating with the hermaphrodites, but the hermaphrodites also mate with each other, though they produce fewer young.
First formally described as *Prionodes baldwini* by American ichthyologists Barton Warren Evermann and Millard Caleb Marsh, the type locality is Culebra, Puerto Rico. The specific name honors Albertus Hutchinson Baldwin (1865–1935), the artist on the 1898 expedition aboard the U.S. Fish Commission steamer *Fish Hawk* that collected the type specimen.
