Green was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and attended Omaha North before transferring to Omaha Central for high school. He was a high school All-American and state 'Player of the Year' as a senior. He also ran track and holds the 10th fastest 100 meter dash in Nebraska history at 10.61 seconds. He competed in powerlifting, placing 2nd in the ADFPA High School National Powerlifting Championships. In college at Nebraska, he was a three-year starter and key contributor on two national championship teams. He set the school's single-season freshman rushing record with 1,086 yards in 1995. As a junior in 1997, he rushed for 1,877 yards and 22 touchdowns, was a Doak Walker Award finalist, and set an Orange Bowl record with 206 rushing yards in the 1998 Orange Bowl. He was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 1998 NFL draft. After two seasons, he was traded to the Green Bay Packers along with a fifth-round pick for Fred Vinson and a sixth-round pick. With the Packers, he was a four-time Pro Bowler (2001–2004) and set the franchise record for rushing yards. He also played for the Houston Texans and returned to the Packers in 2009, breaking Jim Taylor's record to become the all-time leading rusher in Packers history. He later played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL and signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL before retiring in August 2011.
