The Mummy's Curse
A modern teen becomes a living mummy, trapped between worlds by an ancient Egyptian curse.
The Mummy's Curse is the fifth book in the original Goosebumps book series, titled The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb. It is not a single monster but a supernatural affliction that binds a modern teenager to an ancient Egyptian tomb robber named Imhotep. In this chilling tale, the curse manifests through a series of terrifying transformations and physical decay, turning the victim into a living mummy while they are still conscious. It serves as the central antagonist force in its story, driving the plot through a race against time before the transformation becomes permanent.
Lore & Background
Once triggered, the curse begins with subtle changes like skin tightening and hair falling out, rapidly progressing to the spontaneous wrapping of bandages around the victim's limbs. Unlike a typical zombie or ghost, the cursed individual retains their full awareness during the process, experiencing the horror of being mummified alive. The only known way to break this cycle is to return the stolen artifact to its rightful place in the tomb before the final transformation completes.
Reader's Guide
Zack Young is the primary protagonist and victim, a curious teenager who accidentally triggers the curse by bringing an ancient artifact home from a museum or excavation site. His key trait is his initial skepticism turning into sheer terror as he physically transforms. Imhotep serves as the spectral source of the curse. Though often unseen directly in human form during the book's events, his presence looms over every chapter. He represents the wrath of the past and the consequence of greed or disrespect for ancient burial rites. The Curse itself acts as a sentient entity, possessing no physical body but manifesting through environmental changes like sudden heat, dust storms indoors, and the spontaneous appearance of bandages. Its weakness is tied to the artifact; returning the object breaks the magical link before Zack becomes fully mummified.
