Lore & Background

The Priestess begins her adventuring career as a porcelain-ranked novice, the lowest possible rank in the Guild. She is an orphan raised in a temple, where she learned her healing and protective magic. Her first mission ends in disaster when her party encounters goblins; the rest of her party is either wiped out or raped. She is saved by Goblin Slayer, a silver-ranked adventurer who only concerns himself with hunting goblins. After this traumatic event, she joins his party. Despite her youth and initial inexperience, she possesses a high proficiency in her magic, including healing spells, the miracle of holy light, and protective spells. Her deep fondness for Goblin Slayer grows as they adventure together.

Origins and Media Expansion

Goblin Slayer was posted on an online textboard starting from October 2012, as a work that combined ASCII art with dialogue (the format is known as 'Yaruo Thread' on Japanese internet). The series was then rewritten into the format of a novel and submitted to competitions organized by publishers. Although the novel version failed to win awards in the Fujimi Fantasia Contest, it was picked up by GA Bunko editors when the author enrolled his other works into their competition. The work started publishing commercially via GA Bunko. Yen Press licensed the novels for publication in North America, and released the first volume in English on December 20, 2016. A manga adaptation by Kōsuke Kurose began serialization in the June 2016 issue of Square Enix's seinen manga magazine Monthly Big Gangan on May 25, 2016. A prequel manga by Kento Eida runs in Young Gangan. An anime television series adaptation by White Fox aired from October to December 2018. A second season by Liden Films aired from October to December 2023.

The Core Party and Supporting Cast

The characters in this story do not carry proper names but are named by their classes or occupations. The Priestess is a member of Goblin Slayer's party. Other characters include Cow Girl, Goblin Slayer's childhood best friend and a farm hand on her uncle's farm; Guild Girl, a young woman who runs the Guild's front office as a receptionist; High Elf Archer, a 2,000-year-old high elf adventurer of Ranger class; Dwarf Shaman, a 107-year-old Dwarf adventurer of spellcaster class; Lizard Priest, a Lizardman adventurer; Witch, a sorceress who is an acquaintance of Goblin Slayer; Spearman, a warrior who is Witch's partner; Sword Maiden, a hero who helped defeat the previous Demon Lord; and Noble Fencer, a swordswoman of noble origin.

Thematic Darkness and World Building

In a world of fantasy, adventurers come from far and wide to join the Guild. They complete contracts to earn gold and glory. An inexperienced priestess joins her first adventuring party, but comes into danger after her first contact involving goblins goes wrong. As the rest of her party is either wiped out or raped, she is saved by a man known as Goblin Slayer, an adventurer whose only purpose is the eradication of goblins with extreme prejudice. Goblin Slayer is a 20-year-old silver ranked adventurer who only concerns himself with hunting goblins. As a child, he was the sole survivor of a goblin attack on his village, an event that defined his deep hatred and obsession of killing all goblins.
