Thai rock band that fused grunge with traditional Thai melodies.
Last updated
Loso (Thai: โลโซ) is a Thai rock band led by singer, guitarist, and composer Seksan Sukpimai, known as Sek Loso. The group formed in Bangkok in 1994. Their name is a twist on "hi-so," a Thai slang term for the upper class (from English "high society"), chosen to highlight the band's working-class roots. Loso is one of the first Thai bands to gain even modest international attention.
Success (1996–1998)
The band split up in 2003, and Seksan performed as Sek Loso until the group reunited in November 2021. In the mid-1990s, Loso became a fixture in the Thai rock scene. After signing with Asanee Chotikul's More Music label, distributed by GMM Grammy, they released their debut album, Lo-Society, in 1996.
They created a distinctive sound by blending guitar-driven indie music—a style earlier explored by the rock band Carabao—with traditional Thai melodies and rhythms. Loso found unexpected mainstream success in Thailand with their second album, Entertainment, which was called a "record for the Thai industry" after selling over two million copies. Their later albums each sold roughly a million copies in Thailand. In 1993, Seksan Sukpimai was playing in various bands in Nakhon Sawan province while studying at Nakorn Ratchasima Technical College.
Formation (1993–1996)
While studying electrical engineering at Nakorn Sawan Technical College, he performed in pubs across the provinces and played for a band called "Diamond," where he met fellow musician Apirat Sukchit, known as Ratt. After Diamond broke up in 1994, Sek and Yai formed a short-lived band named Climax. When Climax ended in mid-1994, Sek and Yai moved to Bangkok to pursue music more seriously, both together and separately.
They faced major difficulties getting noticed, with record labels repeatedly rejecting them because of their unconventional image and style, which stood apart from the pop and rock trends of the time. Later in 1995, Sek and Yai joined with Apirath "Rath" Sukkhajitr to complete the original trio. Inspired by the grunge movement, especially Nirvana, Loso aimed for a raw, powerful sound. Their goal was to connect with everyday people by reflecting their struggles and emotions.
Background
Loso was formed in 1994 after Seksan Sukpimai and Apirat Sukchit (Yai) relocated to Bangkok following the breakup of their band Climax. The original trio was completed later that same year when they joined with Apirath 'Rath' Sukkhajitr. Inspired by the grunge rock movement, particularly Nirvana, Loso aimed to capture a raw, powerful sound. Their name was chosen to symbolize their commitment to representing ordinary people.
In 1996, Loso signed with Asanee Chotikul's More Music label and released their debut album Lo-Society. Their second album Entertainment (1998) sold over two million copies, becoming a landmark in the Thai music industry.
