Plot

Tina Cohen-Chang proposes a Sadie Hawkins dance at McKinley High to give female students more agency, and Blaine Anderson agrees to organize it. Finn Hudson, the glee club director, instructs the female members of New Directions to perform songs for the people they wish to invite. Tina sings "I Don't Know How to Love Him" for Blaine, revealing a crush, but he turns her down because he has developed feelings for Sam Evans. Sam, meanwhile, is looking into whether the Dalton Academy Warblers cheated during Sectionals.

In New York, Kurt Hummel enrolls at NYADA. With Rachel Berry focused on her relationship with Brody Weston, Kurt joins the school's glee club, the Adam's Apples, hoping to meet new people. Rachel warns him this is "social suicide," but Kurt is drawn to the club's captain, Adam Crawford, after Adam performs Jonathan Coulton's cover of "Baby Got Back." Kurt subsequently asks Adam on a date.

Back in Lima, Brittany Pierce encourages Marley Rose to invite Jake Puckerman to the dance by performing "Tell Him." Jake is torn when Kitty Wilde also asks him out. His brother, Noah "Puck" Puckerman, advises him to choose Marley, but Puck ends up attending with Kitty instead. Blaine confides in Tina about his crush on Sam, and the two decide to go to the dance as friends.

At the event, the male members of New Directions sing "No Scrubs," followed by the female members performing "Locked Out of Heaven." Sam shows Blaine and Finn evidence that Warblers captain Hunter Clarington had the Warblers using steroids to boost their performance. Finn plans to use this against the Warblers after getting more details from Trent, a Warbler who refused the steroids. Ryder Lynn closes the dance with "I Only Have Eyes for You," as Jake and Marley start a relationship. Rachel asks Brody to move in with her.

Production

Ross Maxwell wrote the episode, and co-executive producer Bradley Buecker directed it. New cast member Oliver Kieran-Jones appears as Adam Crawford, who leads NYADA’s glee club called Adam’s Apples, and he performs a song. Ashley Fink makes her first appearance since early season three, reprising her role as Lauren Zizes, a former New Directions member and wrestling champion. Other returning characters include glee club members Sugar Motta (Vanessa Lengies), Joe Hart (Samuel Larsen), Wade “Unique” Adams (Alex Newell), Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist), Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist), Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin), and Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner), along with football coach Shannon Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones), cheerleader Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter), NYADA junior Brody Weston (Geyer), and Dalton Academy Warblers captain Hunter Clarington (Nolan Gerard Funk).

Six songs appear in the episode, all released as singles. Jenna Ushkowitz performs “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar. Heather Morris and Benoist sing “Tell Him” by The Exciters. Newell and Benoist perform Bruno Mars’s “Locked Out of Heaven.”

Kevin McHale, Darren Criss, Overstreet, Larsen, and Jenner cover TLC’s “No Scrubs.” Jenner sings The Flamingos’ “I Only Have Eyes for You.” The sixth track is Jonathan Coulton’s arrangement of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” performed by new cast member Oliver Kieran-Jones, used without permission or credit. In response, Coulton re-released his version as “Baby Got Back (In the Style of Glee),” which he described as a “cover of Glee’s cover of my cover of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s song, which is to say it’s EXACTLY THE SAME as my original version.”

He stated that all proceeds from sales through the end of February 2013 would go to two Glee-related charities: the VH1 Save the Music Foundation and the It Gets Better Project.
