Academic conference on aging in Alberta, Canada.
Last updated
The Aging Symposium in Alberta, Canada is an academic conference on aging first held in 1982. Initially convened every ten years, from 2002 onward it has been held every five years. Sponsorship has alternated among several distinct gerontology research groups in Alberta.
History
The Aging Symposium has taken place in Edmonton, Calgary, and Hinton. Research presented at the 2007 Edmonton symposium has been cited in books by Greg Critser and Greg Fahy, and in articles in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging. The first symposium was sponsored by the Canadian Association of Gerontology and coincided with the establishment of the University of Alberta's Centre for Gerontology, later renamed the Alberta Centre on Aging. That centre was created to enhance understanding of aging through research support and facilitation, and was sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Medicine.
The 1982 symposium was held May 31–June 3 at the Hotel Macdonald and was organized by Dr. Hayden Roberts. A second symposium took place October 22–25, 1992, co-sponsored by the Canadian Association of Gerontology and the Centre for Gerontology. In October 2002, a third symposium was sponsored by the Alberta Council on Aging and held in Calgary, funded by the University of Calgary, Athabasca University, the Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta, and the Canadian Institute on Health and Aging.
