Barbiturate

Barbiturates are a class of depressant drugs chemically derived from barbituric acid. They have been used medically as anxiolytics, hypnotics, and anticonvulsants, but carry risks of physical and psychological addiction, overdose, and other adverse effects. They have largely been replaced by benzodiazepines and Z-drugs in routine practice due to lower overdose risk and the lack of an antidote for barbiturate overdose, though they remain in use for anesthesia, epilepsy, euthanasia, capital punishment, and assisted suicide.
