History

Deichkind first broke through around the year 2000 with the track Bon Voyage. Their original sound was alternative hip hop, but over the 2000s they blended in more electronic music, dance, and punk. The most well-known tracks from this electronic-hip hop phase are Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah) from 2006, Arbeit nervt from 2008, and Leider geil from 2012, all of which made the charts. In 2005 the band performed for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at the Bundesvision Song Contest with Electric Super Dance Band, finishing 14th with 12 points. Their longtime producer Sebastian “Sebi” Hackert passed away in 2009. The album Befehl von ganz unten, released in 2012, was their first major success, moving over 200,000 copies. Niveau Weshalb Warum came out in 2015 and hit number one in both Germany and Switzerland. That same year, they contributed Happy New Fear to the soundtrack of the German film Victoria. Rapper Sascha Reimann, also known as Ferris MC or “Ferris Hilton,” left the group in 2018 after a decade with them. Henning Besser acts as the band’s creative director, handling live show concepts, costumes, and visual ideas. He has often worked with a team of visual artists such as Daniel Josefsohn, Tim Bruening, Roman Schramm, Benjakon, and the filmmaker collective Auge Altona. Though the band started in Hamburg, they now operate mainly out of Berlin.
