History

Chris Harms started Lord of the Lost as a solo project in the middle of 2007. He put early songs on MySpace, got a strong response, and saw he needed a full band to perform them live. He brought in musicians he knew from Hamburg’s music scene, and they began work on a first album. Harms first called the project Lord, but changed it to Lord of the Lost to avoid name conflicts with Lordi and The Lords. Before this, Harms had been the singer and guitarist of the rock band Philiae from 1999 to 2004, then a guitarist and second singer in the glam metal band The Pleasures from 2004 to 2007, and also played on projects like Big Boy and Unterart.

The band put out their first single, Dry the Rain, in 2009, and their debut album Fears came out in 2010 on the independent label Out of Line. While they were recording their second album, Antagony, they did a long tour through 2010 that included international dates and festivals like Wave-Gotik-Treffen, Wacken Open Air, and M’era Luna Festival. In spring 2011, they released the single Sex on Legs from Antagony, which came out soon after and is considered their first concept album. They supported that album by touring with Mono Inc. on the Viva Hades tour.

Summer 2012 saw the release of their third album, Die Tomorrow. Right before that came out, they started working on a fourth album, From the Flame into the Fire. In October 2012, they opened for Letzte Instanz on the Ewig Tour. They hit the road again in spring 2013, co-headlining the Darkness Kills tour with Unzucht, and in September started the We Are the Lost tour with Lost Area. In October 2013, they performed as part of Gothic Meets Klassik at the Leipzig Gewandhaus with the Zielona Gòra Symphony Orchestra.

In February 2014, drummer Christian Schellhorn left the band, and Tobias Mertens took his place. That March, they played their first US tour, funded through crowdfunding. Fans and sponsors raised $12,775 in two months, beating the $10,000 goal. In March 2015, they released the all-acoustic album Swan Songs, which hit number 34 on the GfK Entertainment Charts. They performed songs from that album live at the Out of Line Weekender in Berlin that same month.

Reception

The debut album Fears received an overall positive critique by the music press, though it has not always been received as highly innovative. Sonic Seducer praised the "pleasant deep promising vocals" and "dark, melodramatic moments", describing the album as a "dark mélange of music styles". Zillo called it "not really original or ground-breaking" but praised its "hard and unconditional songs". Orkus wrote that they had waited a long time for an album "so interesting and rich in variety". Metal.de described the album as "absolutely okay" but suggested listening to some songs before buying.
