Flag of the German Empire

The black-white-red flag of the German Empire, officially adopted in 1892.

Last updated

The black-white-red flag combines the colors of Prussia and the Hanseatic League with those of the Holy Roman Empire.[1] It became the national flag of the German Empire in 1892 under Wilhelm II.[2]

What the cited sources add

The 1867 North German Confederation constitution states: "Die Flagge der Kriegs- und Handelsmarine ist schwarz-weiß-roth"[4] The 1871 German Empire constitution repeats the same wording for the flag of the war and merchant marine.[10] A 2020 Der Spiegel article notes that historian Eckart Conze says the flag stands for rejection of the current political system: parliamentarism, liberal representative democracy, and its elites.[11] The same article reports that neo-Nazis often use the imperial flag because using the swastika flag is punishable.[11]
