Lethal white syndrome (LWS) is an autosomal genetic disorder most prevalent in the American Paint Horse. Affected foals are born after a full 11-month gestation and appear externally normal, with all-white or nearly all-white coats and blue eyes, but internally have a nonfunctioning colon. Within hours, signs of colic appear, and affected foals die within a few days, often leading to humane euthanasia. The disease is caused by a mutation in the endothelin receptor type B (EDNRB) gene when homozygous, and both parents must be carriers for an affected foal to be born.
