Coldstone
A fractured soul in a stone shell, fighting for control of its own destiny.
Coldstone is a synthetic gargoyle from the Gargoyles series. He was created by David Xanatos and Dr. Sevarius using genetic material from three deceased gargoyles. This unique origin resulted in a single body housing three distinct consciousnesses that constantly struggle for control.
Lore & Background
Coldstone's existence challenges the definition of gargoyle identity. While he shares the stone sleep cycle and physical durability of his kin, his origin story makes him an outcast among them. Initially intended to be a weapon for Xanatos, Coldstone's rebellion highlights the danger of playing god with sentient life. He eventually seeks freedom from his creators, proving that even artificial souls are capable of free will and self-determination.
Reader's Guide
Coldstone originated as an experiment by David Xanatos and Dr. Sevarius, designed to be the ultimate gargoyle weapon. Unlike natural-born stone sleepers, he was constructed from genetic fragments of three deceased gargoyles recovered from a museum vault. This unique genesis resulted in a single physical form housing three distinct consciousnesses, constantly vying for dominance within his mind. His personality is inherently fractured and volatile. Depending on which soul holds control at any given moment, Coldstone shifts between aggression, intellectual calculation, and confused innocence. This internal conflict makes him unpredictable to allies and enemies alike. He initially served Xanatos but eventually rebelled against his creator when the manipulation became too great. Relationships with the Manhattan Clan are complex. While he was created as a rival, he often finds common ground with Goliath due to their shared nature as stone beings burdened by unnatural origins. Over time, Coldstone evolves from a mindless weapon into a sentient being seeking autonomy. He struggles to define his own identity beyond the sum of his parts.
