Recurring Subjects and Themes

Garfield's running gags: Mondays, lasagna, diets, spiders, Nermal, Odie and Jon's luck with dates.

Garfield's running gags come back again and again in Jim Davis's comic strip. Many are about Garfield's obsessive eating and his weight, his hatred of Mondays, diets and any kind of exercise, his dislike of spiders, his constant shedding, which annoys Jon, and the way he treats Odie, Jon and the kitten Nermal, whom he keeps trying to mail to Abu Dhabi or simply throws out the front door.

Background

He will eat nearly anything apart from raisins and spinach, but lasagna is his favourite, and he also eats Jon's houseplants and pet fish. He usually spares mice, sometimes even teaming up with them for mischief, but swats spiders flat. Other gags turn on Jon's poor social skills: before he began dating Liz his attempts to get a date mostly failed, and when Garfield tags along on their dates he tends to pig out. The characters also often break the fourth wall, to explain something to the reader or to glance out of the panel when someone is belittled.
